Please read our photo report about Jeanie's arrival and also view New York photos

Jeanie Johnston will be docked in New York from Thursday, 3rd July, after sailing on a three day voyage from Bristol PA. The ship will be open to visitors from Friday 4th July to Sunday 13th July at North Cove Marina, Battery Park City alongside the Irish Famine Memorial and will depart for Port Jefferson, Long Island on Sunday 13th July at approx 5pm, arriving there on Monday 14th.

The visit to New York is particularly symbolic as the city was the destination for so many Irish emigrants. By 1860 about one quarter of New York's population of 800,000 was Irish-born. The Famine Memorial was commissioned to be a "contemplative space, devoted to raising public awareness of the events that led to the Great Irish Hunger and Migration of 1845-1852."

Details of Jeanie's arrival

  • The ship will arrive at the Statue of Liberty at approx 10.00AM, she will be in full sail on the Hudson and will berth in the marina sometime between 12 noon and 2.00PM. She will be escorted by the New York Fire Department Boats giving the red, white and blue water cannon salute and flanked by a large fleet of other vessels.
  • The arrival ceremony to greet Jeanie will take place from 12.30 and 3.00PM and the ship will be welcomed to New York by the Governor of New York, George Pataki and Irish Tourism Minister John O'Donoghue.
